Primary 4 Rectangles and Squares
Keywords
- Right angle
- A square corner measuring 90°.
- Opposite sides
- The two sides across from each other.
- Equal sides
- Sides with the same length.
- Parallel
- Lines that stay the same distance apart.
Rectangle
A rectangle has four right angles. Its longer dimension is the length and its shorter dimension is the breadth. The two opposite lengths are equal, and the two opposite breadths are equal.
- Four right angles
- Opposite lengths are equal
- Opposite breadths are equal
- Opposite sides are parallel
Draw a rectangle
Draw a rectangle with length 6 units and breadth 3 units on the grid. Each grid space is 1 unit.
Start at a grid intersection. Each grid space is 1 unit.
Try together
A rectangle has length 6 units and breadth 3 units. Which sides match?
Reveal the answer
The top and bottom are the two equal lengths of 6 units. The left and right are the two equal breadths of 3 units.
Square
A square has four right angles and four equal sides. Its opposite sides are also parallel. A square is a special rectangle because all four sides match.
- Four right angles
- All four sides are equal
- Opposite sides are parallel
Draw a square
Draw a square with sides of 4 units on the grid. Each grid space is 1 unit.
Start at a grid intersection. Each grid space is 1 unit.
Try together
If the first side of a square is 4 units, how long are the other three sides?
Reveal the answer
Each of the other three sides is also 4 units.
Remember: A square is a rectangle with one extra rule: all four sides are equal.
