Primary 6 Division of fractions
Use the same three steps for each division: keep, change, flip. The number being divided stays the same; only the divisor is turned over.
Keep, change, flip
Then multiply and simplify. Write a whole number over 1 before flipping it. Change a mixed number to an improper fraction before starting.
Keep 34, change the sign, then flip 12 to 21.
Dividing a proper fraction by a whole number
Write the whole number as a fraction over 1. Keep the proper fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the whole-number divisor.
Work out 34 ÷ 2
- Keep: 34 stays the same. Write 2 as 21.
- Change: replace ÷ with ×.
- Flip: 21 becomes 12.
- Multiply: 34 × 12 = 38.
Answer: 38
Try together
Work out 23 ÷ 4.

Dividing a whole number or proper fraction by a proper fraction
The divisor is already a fraction. Keep the first number, change the sign, flip the divisor, then multiply.
Whole number ÷ proper fraction
Work out 2 ÷ 14.
- Keep: write 2 as 21; it stays the same.
- Change: replace ÷ with ×.
- Flip: 14 becomes 41.
- Multiply: 21 × 41 = 8.
Answer: 8
Proper fraction ÷ proper fraction
Work out 34 ÷ 12.
- Keep: 34 stays the same.
- Change: replace ÷ with ×.
- Flip: 12 becomes 21.
- Multiply: 34 × 21 = 64 = 32 = 1 12.
Answer: 1 12
Try together
Work out 12 ÷ 34.

Dividing a mixed number by a proper fraction
First change the mixed number to an improper fraction. Then use keep, change, flip exactly as before.
Work out 1 12 ÷ 34
- Convert: 1 12 = 32.
- Keep: 32 stays the same.
- Change: replace ÷ with ×.
- Flip: 34 becomes 43.
- Multiply: 32 × 43 = 126 = 2.
Answer: 2
Try together
Work out 2 14 ÷ 34.
