Primary 6 Average
An average tells us what each value would be if the total were shared equally among all the data.
Find the average
First add all the values. Then count how many values there are. Divide the total by that number.
Average=total valuenumber of datatotal value ÷ number of data
Example 1
The four values are 4, 7, 5, and 8. What is their average?
- Add the values: 4 + 7 + 5 + 8 = 24.
- Count the data: there are 4 values.
- Divide: 24 ÷ 4 = 6.
Average = 6.
Find a missing value
Example 2
The average of 12, 14, 18, and one missing value is 15. Find the missing value.
The average is already given. Use it to find the total of all four values first.
- Count the data: there are 4 values, including the missing one.
- Find the total: 15 × 4 = 60.
- Add the known values: 12 + 14 + 18 = 44.
- Find the missing value: 60 − 44 = 16.
Missing value = 16. Check: (12 + 14 + 18 + 16) ÷ 4 = 15.
