Primary 5 Decimals

Keywords

Decimal point
The mark between whole-number and fractional places.
Tenths
The first place to the right of the decimal point.
Hundredths
The second place to the right of the decimal point.
Thousandths
The third place to the right of the decimal point.
Multiple
A number made by multiplying another number by a whole number, such as 300 = 3 × 100.

Multiply decimals by 10, 100, 1000 and their multiples

For ×10, ×100 and ×1000, move the decimal point one, two or three places to the right. For example, to multiply by 300, multiply by 3, then by 100.

Choose a multiplier

0.347 × 10 = ?

Follow the curved arrows for each decimal-point move.

Step 0 of 1
    See worked example

    Work out 0.047 × 300.

    1. Split 300 into 3 × 100.
    2. 0.047 × 3 = 0.141.
    3. Multiply by 100: move the decimal point two places right, so 0.141 × 100 = 14.1.

    Answer: 14.1.

    Try together

    Work out 0.235 × 20.

    Reveal the answer

    20 = 2 × 10. First 0.235 × 2 = 0.47, then 0.47 × 10 = 4.7.

Divide decimals by 10, 100, 1000 and their multiples

For ÷10, ÷100 and ÷1000, move the decimal point one, two or three places to the left. For example, to divide by 300, divide by 3, then by 100.

    Choose a divisor

    3.75 ÷ 10 = ?

Follow the curved arrows for each decimal-point move.

    Step 0 of 1
      See worked example

      Work out 18.9 ÷ 300.

      1. Split 300 into 3 × 100.
      2. 18.9 ÷ 3 = 6.3.
      3. Divide by 100: move the decimal point two places left, so 6.3 ÷ 100 = 0.063.

      Answer: 0.063.

      Try together

      Work out 36 ÷ 300.

      Reveal the answer

      300 = 3 × 100. First 36 ÷ 3 = 12, then 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12.
