Hours to minutes
Give every hour a group of 60 minutes, then count all the groups.
How many minutes are in 2 hours?
Common mistake: Writing 2 h as 200 min. One hour has 60 minutes, so 2 h is 120 min.
Minutes to hours
When the minutes make complete groups of 60, count those groups to find the hours.
How many hours are in 180 minutes?
Common mistake: Grouping minutes into hundreds. Three groups of 60 make 180 minutes, so 180 min is 3 h.
Minutes to hours and minutes
Take out as many full 60-minute groups as possible. The part left over is the minutes.
Write 145 minutes as hours and minutes.
Common mistake: Writing 145 min as 1 h 45 min by taking away 100. Take away groups of 60: 145 − 120 = 25 min.
Hours and minutes to minutes
Change the hours into minutes first. Then add the extra minutes.
Write 1 hour 35 minutes in minutes.
Common mistake: Writing 1 h 35 min as 135 min. The hour contributes 60 min, giving 95 min altogether.
