Primary 1 Multiplication and Division
See equal groups, then count what the pictures show. Share the same collection equally to see division.
Keywords
Use each word while pointing to a group or a sharing picture.
- Equal groups
- Groups with the same number of objects in each one.
- Number of groups
- How many equal groups there are.
- In each group
- The number of objects in one group.
- Multiply / times
- Find the total in equal groups.
- Divide / share equally
- Split a collection into equal shares or equal-sized groups.
- Altogether
- The total number of objects in all the groups.
What multiplication and division mean
Multiplication joins equal groups. Division starts with a collection and makes equal shares or equal-sized groups. Choose a view to see how the same 12 apples can be arranged.
Look for: Every group must have the same number of apples. Point to each group and count its apples before reading the equation.
Multiplying within 40
Choose how many equal groups to show and how many apples go in each group. All selected groups appear together. Use the step-by-step button to build them one at a time. The picture stays within 40 apples.
Dividing within 20
Begin with all the apples in one collection. In each round, give one apple to every child. Stop when no apples remain, then count one child's share.
Printables
Print the 2 to 10 times tables as separate lists, from 1 × 2 through 10 × 10. The Topic 3 examples stay within 40; larger products are a reference for later learning.
